Squarespace sites designed for your business

Hudson South designs Squarespace sites for businesses that want a simple editor they manage themselves. Squarespace runs the hosting, security certificates, and platform underneath, and the design work happens inside its own editor, within limits Squarespace documents openly.

Squarespace is built for owners who want to run their own site without managing servers or software. It trades flexibility for simplicity, and it is unusually open about where that trade sits. Squarespace is one of three platforms in our website builds practice.

On this page: what Squarespace handles for the owner, what design work looks like inside its editor, the limits Squarespace documents in its own help center, and which businesses it suits.

What Squarespace handles for the owner

Squarespace's help center says all of its plans include bandwidth and hosting for the site and its content. SSL is enabled automatically, with free certificates for domains pointing to Squarespace sites, and the owner does not have to set anything up. Squarespace also updates the platform itself, and its code block documentation notes that custom code can cause display issues with future updates to the platform.

Several search basics are automatic too. Squarespace says it creates and updates a sitemap, generates metadata, uses stable, readable page addresses, makes every site mobile-optimized by default, and generates structured data for set types, including local business, organization, and website. Form submissions can go to email: Squarespace's form storage settings include an email option, with one connected address per form.

What the design work involves

Sites on Squarespace version 7.1 are edited in Fluid Engine, which Squarespace calls its primary editing experience, a drag-and-drop system with a grid in the background as blocks move. Our Squarespace builds are designed for the business within that editor. A template is not a design; it is a starting arrangement chosen before anyone knew your business. The design work is deciding what each page must say, then arranging sections and blocks so the answer comes first and the layout holds up on a phone.

Squarespace's own ceilings shape the plan. It recommends no more than 20 sections per page and no more than 60 blocks on a layout page, and a dropdown holds at most 10 pages. Small sites rarely hit those numbers, though they reward a plan that gives each topic its own page instead of one long page carrying everything. Because the owner will keep editing after launch, the design also has to survive those edits, which argues for a few clear section styles over one-off flourishes.

The limits Squarespace documents

Squarespace publishes its limits plainly, which makes them easy to weigh before committing. The ones that most often matter to a growing business:

AreaWhat Squarespace's help center says
Site sizeUp to 1,000 pages on current plans, with a recommendation of no more than 400.
Structured dataGenerated automatically for set content types; it cannot be edited or removed.
Custom codeCode-based customizations fall outside Squarespace support, and Squarespace says it cannot promise their functionality or full compatibility, including on mobile. JavaScript in code blocks is limited to certain plans.
RedirectsThe URL mappings field holds 400 KB, usually around 2,500 redirect lines. Image and file URLs cannot be redirected, and a redirect works only once the old page is deleted or disabled.
ExportExport produces a WordPress .xml file covering layout pages, one blog page, and text, image, and gallery content. Style settings, store pages, additional blog pages, and custom CSS are left out.

None of these rule Squarespace out for a typical service business. A useful question for your team before deciding: "In the next few years, will we need a second blog, a large product catalog, or markup Squarespace doesn't generate?" If every answer is no, the limits are unlikely to bind. The signs that a business has outgrown the platform are laid out in when does a business outgrow Squarespace.

Who Squarespace fits, and who it doesn't

It fits an owner who wants a simple editor and plans to manage the site personally: a fictional physical therapy clinic in Colorado whose front desk updates hours and staff bios, or a consultant who adds a case note each month. Someone editing their own pages should not have to invent what the business knows every time they open the editor, so the site works best when its core pages already carry the facts and the owner's job is keeping them current.

It fits poorly when the business depends on functionality that only custom code can provide, needs several blogs or a large catalog, wants full control over its structured data, or expects a long list of redirects that includes files. In those cases a Netlify build or WordPress is usually the stronger choice.

Platforms

The other platforms

  • Netlify (hand-coded static sites)

A Netlify build from Hudson South is a hand-coded static site: finished pages served as written, with no database or plugin layer behind them.

  • WordPress

Hudson South builds WordPress sites on a custom theme designed for the business, not a marketplace theme with a few changes.

Questions

Common questions

Will I be able to change the site myself after launch?

Yes, and that is the reason we suggest Squarespace to owners who want a simple editor they run themselves. Text, images, hours, and new pages are all handled in the same editor the site was designed in.

Do I need to buy hosting or an SSL certificate separately?

Squarespace's help center says hosting comes with every plan and SSL is turned on automatically for domains pointed at a Squarespace site.

If I move my current site to Squarespace, what happens to my old page addresses?

Squarespace's URL mappings let old addresses forward to new pages with permanent 301 redirects, within the size and file limits Squarespace lists.

Can a Squarespace site run custom code?

Squarespace allows code blocks, with JavaScript on certain plans, but it places code-based customizations outside its support. Our Squarespace designs are built in Squarespace's own editor.
